Today I walked into the break room to hear a parent at my work having a speaker-phone conversation with his oldest son screaming "You're not fucking listening!" to which my co-worker replied "You've been screaming at me for 10mins now restating the same things again and again. You need to calm down and talk with respect". He then muted the phone and said to me with a shake of his head "You need another reason not to have kids?" to me to which I made a sad face and left. (My childfree-ness is widely know at work and no-one has really had a go at me for it, which is nice). His oldest has been excluded from school for lack of attendance, refuses to get a job and is at home bullying his younger siblings hence the arguments, that have been going on for months now.A month or two ago I was talking to another co-worker parent who had both of her kids excluded from school and I learnt about the school-to-prison-pipeline (SPP) - "Once a child drops out, they are eight times more likely to be incarcerated than youth who graduate from high school.[9]" So depressing!I think a lot of people fail to think about all the possibilities that could occur when they have children - that their child might get pregnant, keep it and never leave home; that their child might drop out of school, not get a job and become a 'failure to launch' still home with no prospects in their 30s; that their child might have crippling mental/physical health difficulties and can never gain their independence - the list goes on and on.I can't help be feel tremendously relieved I don't have this kind of chaos in my home, and I don't have to deal with anything like it ever. Yet another reason to be relieved I was sterilised 6 years ago! via /r/childfree https://ift.tt/3ll1Tpd
