We are hoping for some perspective and information on bat behavior after encountering one in our airBNB bedroom this past weekend. Is there a good place to help with information such as this?

As the title suggests, we encountered a bat in our bedroom while renting an airBNB near Nehalem, OR (Oregon Coast) this past weekend. We have been in contact with local health officials and our doctors, and while we understand potential risks with rabies, we are hoping there might be some bat experts out there who can provide some info on bat behavior. The Situation:At approximately midnight this past Saturday, my girlfriend went to close the bedroom window after hearing some noises outside (it sounded like a large bug was trying to get in through the screen). Upon closing the window, she let out a scream, and we soon learned why: a bat was trying to exit our room through the window screen. We believe the bat sensed fresh air and was trying to escape from the inside. The bat lightly brushed down her leg and then flew away. We didn’t know what it was at the time – we just heard flutters around the room – so we both hid under covers and turned on a light. For the next few minutes (it felt like eternity) the bat flew in frantic circles above our bed. We think it was thrown off by the bright light in the small room. Eventually, it settled down, found the window again, and kept trying to crawl out and escape. When the coast was clear, my girlfriend bolted to the shower to wash off her leg; this was 30-60 minutes after the bat hand first bounced off of her.We understand in hindsight that it would have been best to capture the bat to be tested, but unfortunately we were afraid of it and slept in the car instead. The airBNB host was gracious to have experts come in and look for it, but unfortunately the bat could not be found. For all we know, the bat could have been in the house for the entire 48 hours we were there, but we didn’t see or hear it before the window incident. After some frantic googling, we learned that bat rabies can be very dangerous. So, we are hoping for some perspective from anyone familiar with bat behavior to help us understand our risk (the rabies vaccine is very expensive). We don’t know exactly what type of bat it was, but I was surprised by how small it was and it seemed to nearly all black. I was impressed how it could crawl up and down the wall while searching for an escape.Naturally, we are a bit nervous, and we are hoping any bat experts out there can help provide some information. We are in contact with local health officials and our doctors, and will continue to do so.Here are a few questions we have:What does a bat bite feel like? While my girlfriend did not feel any sort of prick or bite, we have read some reports that bites can be too small to see or feel. She just remembers it bouncing off her leg and then fluttering away immediately. Is it possible to tell from the bat’s behavior described above if it likely had rabies or not?If the bat was flying in circles above us, and occasionally landing near clothes beside our bed, is there any risk that it could have infected us while circling above us or dropping saliva on our clothes?Thank you so much to anyone who might be able to help. It’s been a stressful few days, and we think having more information on bat behavior could be helpful to us. via /r/Advice https://ift.tt/3dES6HG
